* The Colors Catch the Sunlight *

(The Stained Glass Song)

The colors catch the sunlight,
The colors catch my eye,
And as I watch them sparkle,
My thoughts begin to fly....
Each of us is like the glass that brings in the light,
Dark without the radiance that comes from up high.....
The sunbeams bring the colors,
The rays make us glow,
The brilliance that we long for
Depends on that flow...
Love, like the sunlight, floods through us all,
Creating the beauty that opens the wall.........
So let us catch the sunlight,
And let us play our parts,
Receiving all the sunshine
That can flow through our hearts..
Light makes the rainbow, of which we're a part,
Love makes the patterns that light.... up the dark.

When my first-born, Jessica, was a baby, I tried to find a class to learn stained glass. Failing that (in rural North Central Kansas), I finally taught myself with the help of a couple of books. Before long, I had requests to teach others. Reluctantly I agreed, and ended up teaching over 100 students over the next 3-4 years.

I've retired from stained glass more than once, and still find it fascinating. As a child, I would go into our plowed field after a rain, collect small bits of colored glass washed to the earth's surface and carefully arrange them on narrow shelves in our old garage.

Years later, Cloud County (Kansas) was successful in being named the Stained Glass Capital of Kansas. In 1996, a group of us were planning the first Stained Glass Day to commemorate that honor. I was asked to sing, and promptly agreed, then had second thoughts as I wondered, “What do I sing for Stained Glass Day?” The celebration involved having over 100 4th graders come to an exquisite church out on the prairie, at St. Joseph, Kansas, filled with brilliant stained glass windows, but no longer a congregation. As I remembered the sun pouring through the west windows' stunning red glass, this is the song I wrote and sang for them.
