I was reading in the papers 'bout the Littleton school,
from safe in my easy chair.

would raise a kid so dark, to scare.

And heard her mother's put-downs and threats.

I heard the other morning in the local coffee shop
A family lost their children from abuse.
But no one was there to take them in, no shelter could be found....
Two children finally slept that night in jail.
And then there is the daughter of the doctor on the hill,
A mother at 14 and more,
The baby born to alcohol, the mom a child still -
To hear the tales, my heart was sore.
And that night in my dreams that child
Lay and looked at me....

“Want to play some ball with me, Luke?” I called out his name,
And his face lit up and smiled at me....
And in the local fast food joint I spoke to the kids at work,
and tried to learn their names tonight....

Their souls are in their eyes, and their words are what I see...
He is my child. They are all our children.
And they need us more than ever today...
